November 18, 2016

SDA ventured even further into CIFs last night, winning their semi-final game at La Jolla High School. They beat Olympian 12-9 with goals from sophomores Matheus Gensler and Jake Holland, juniors Carl Winner and Kekoa Wheeler, and senior Sam Dumont, and saves from sophomore goalie Dylan Herrera. The team will be in the finals tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. at La Jolla High School.

By the end of the first quarter, SDA had a 4-3 lead over Olympian, thanks to two goals each from Winner and Gensler. Winner scored the first two goals, followed by a successful five meter shot from Gensler. Olympian snuck a few goals in, but Gensler quickly grabbed the lead with the final first quarter shot with less than a minute and a half left in the quarter.

Winner kicked off the second quarter with his third goal of the game, giving the Mustangs a 5-3 lead. After Olympian put in another goal, Holland jumped in with yet another, closely followed by Winner yet again. The first half closed with 7-4 lead for SDA.

Olympian scored twice in the top of the third quarter, setting them within one point of the Mustangs at 7-6. Wheeler increased the lead with a quick recovery off a rebounding shot, and the third quarter closed with the Mustangs holding on to a 8-7 lead.

The fourth and final quarter began, and quickly Olympian tied it up at 8-8. Gensler scored yet another shot, giving SDA the lead again, just to have it tied again at 9-9 a few minutes later. SDA called a timeout. Wheeler comes back in the game, and The Mustangs pick up their speed, finishing the game with a final score of 12-9.
