Girls Volleyball Senior Night
November 1, 2016
This past Thursday saw the end of the SDA girls varsity volleyball regular season and with that, the end of an emotional senior night. In a sentimental 30 minutes, this year’s seniors, consisting of players Kiani Kerstetter, Ashley Fonte, Savannah Casey, and Kiahna Holmen, were each called up individually to have brief pre-written speeches read and to say their thank-yous to those who have supported them so far and will continue to support them on their athletic and academic journeys.
Following the senior ceremony, the Mustangs lined up across from Canyon Crest Academy and the game was underway. The Mustangs came into this matchup looking to bounce back from a loss on Tuesday against Carlsbad. And, after having lost the last match against CCA 0-3, this was clearly going to be no easy task.
The Mustangs came out of the gate swinging, but a series of unfortunate plays led to an early deficit. CCA took the first set handily, but the Mustangs fought back with valor in the second. Unfortunately, the second set fell out of the Mustangs hands, and things were looking bleak. The team seemed to come out with a different mindset, however, and the third set was neck and neck all the way through. As the score ran upward, there were flashes of brilliance, like when Kerstetter completed a series of difficult digs to keep the team alive. Ultimately, mental lapses seemed to be the demise of the Mustangs and the game slipped away in the end.
Despite the loss, the night was highlighted by the recognition of these four players and their dedication to the school and to the volleyball program throughout their four years at SDA.
