3v3 Soccer was “Operation Victorious”
October 3, 2016
The time of year has come for SDA’s annual 3v3 soccer tournament. Beginning Sept. 27, friends came together and competed against their peers in order to be crowned the 3v3 champs of SDA.
The soccer fans of SDA gathered on the field during lunch to watch eight-minute matches take place in the blazing heat. This year, 30 teams participated in the tournament, an increase from last year. Typically, the teams compete for bragging rights, but this year the winning team received tickets to the Homecoming Dance on Oct. 28.
“The key to success is precision,” said junior Junhee Kim, whose team made it to the final four. The field is separated into five smaller fields and the goals are only a couple feet wide. The much smaller field meant that any mistake made often resulted in a goal for the opposition.
For junior Noah Bussell, 3v3 soccer “brings the school together under such a great sport.”
The competition ranged from teams who had never played soccer to some of SDA’s most renown teachers, math teacher Donn Boyd, history teacher Eli Cameron, and English teacher Rob Ross.
Before the first game, Ross said, “We don’t have skill but we plan to, like, bum rush them and get in their personal space. Usually that works.”
“There will be consequences related to grades for those who beat us,” Boyd said.
The teachers saw success early, but ended up getting eliminated on the second day of competition.
The final day of competition was today and the two final teams prepared to play an extended 15-minute match. Operation Victoria, a team consisting of juniors Aidan Escobar, Jake Davis, and David Dovsky, was “operation victorious” in the finale of this week long, epic tournament hosted by ASB.
