Girls Volleyball: SDA vs Mission Hills
September 14, 2016
SDA’s girls volleyball team pulled off a win in three3 sets this Tuesday, Sept.ember 14th, against Mission Hills High School, continuing its winning streak this season.
The first set was a battle between the two teams, featuring amazing plays by senior Kiahna Holmen (#10) and junior Sarah Colla (#12). Holmen kept the opposing team on its toes with her serves, which she directed all around the court, searching for gaps that the players had left. She showed an incredible amount of effort defensively, diving for balls in the back row and refusing to let them drop.
Colla demonstrated her skill as an offensive player, getting various kills from both the net and the back row. She alternated between hitting the ball straight down and placing it strategically where the other players weren’t, adding a new level of surprise to the game. Toward the end of the set, senior Savannah Casey made an amazing one-handed save from the front row, setting the crowd wild. The game ended with a score of 25 to 15.
The second set was a breeze for the girls, who finished 25 to 9. Seniors Savannah Casey and Ashley Fonte (#4) helped maintain the team’s energy and drive throughout the game, putting all their effort out onto the court, Casey offensively and Fonte defensively. Juniors Faith Kelly (#8) and Kathleen Brown (#9) each had long serving runs, Brown finishing off the game with her 4th serve in a row.
During the final set, the girls fought hard for the win, ultimately defeating Mission Hills 25 to 19. Some standout players of the set included libero Kiani Kerstetter (#1), who led the team in defense, making some amazing saves and inspiring uproarious cheers from the crowd. Kerstetter also contributed a three-serve run for the team as well. Finally, sophomore Savannah Hyndman (#5) set the girls ahead with a five-serve run after Kerstetter, guaranteeing them an amazing win.
All the varsity girls worked hard and left all they had on the court. The amount of SDA fans present was impressive, and the loud cheers coming from the stands enhanced the energy of the game. The team’s next game is at 5 p.m. on Thursday the 15th against Westview High School.
