Leicester City Finishes ‘Miracle Season’
An unbelievable comeback story was completed Monday when Leicester City Football Club (FC) completed its miracle season to win the British Premier League. Leicester city clinched first place after second place team Tottenham Spurs wasn’t able to get a win over Chelsea FC. This meant that with the remaining games in the season, no one could catch up to Leicester’s grasp on first place.
Last year, Leicester was almost out of the British Premier League. They had a record of 11 wins, eight ties, and 19 losses, which is much worse than their championship season this year where they won 22 games, had 11 ties, and only lost three games.
At the start of this season, the odds for them to win were 5,000-1, the biggest upset to ever happen in sports. With a measly $5 bet, someone could have won $25,000. To put this into perspective, online betting service Paddy Power gave odds to finding Elvis Presley still alive today at 2,000-1, making Leicester’s win over two times as unlikely.
“In terms of domestic football (soccer), Leicester City winning the premier league is the greatest achievement ever and I think it will never be surpassed,” said Robbie Savage to BBC sport.
A team like Leicester beating all the big clubs in England can only be described as a fairytale, a true miracle season for the underdog Leicester City Foxes. This upset may as well be the sports event of the year, considering the Premier League is the most watched sporting league in the world.
