2014 Winter Olympics
The Olympics, a place where all athletes can show their strength in their favored sport and for their countries. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi Russia this year from Feb. 7-23. This will be the first winter games hosted by the Russian federation; the former Soviet Union hosted the winter games in 1980. The games will be separated into two parts: one in Sochi where all the ice sports will take place and the second in Krasnaya Polyana Mountains where all the snow sports will take place, both within 30 minutes of each other.
Although some of the Olympic sports aren’t the most known to the world, some of the most popular sports this Olympic year will be both men’s and women’s hockey, the bobsledding, pretty much all of the free style snow sports ( snowboarding big air/half pipe, and the skiing big air and half pipe), and the short track speed skating.
Look out for Shaun White, the two-time winning gold medalist of the half pipe, to defend his title. He is also going to be doing slope style this year. Slope style is where a competitor goes down the hill attempting many jumps and rails in order to obtain the most amount of points. In addition to these games, there will be single and doubles figure skating.
Although the Winter Olympics do not have nearly as many team sports than the summer Olympics, these games should be very interesting and entertaining, testing all contestants on speed and performance.
