The girls field hockey team beat Westview on Sept. 21, earning their fourth win in a row versus a Division I school.
The team started the season off with an away game loss to Poway 4-2 on Sept. 7. Then they played LCC at home on Sept. 9, even though there was no school due to the power outage. This game came down to the final moments of a shootout, called “strokes.” SDA came out victorious, winning 1-0 and stunning the LCC girls.
“[LCC] lost ten seniors, we only lost seven,” said junior Maylee Sands, who plays on the varsity team. No matter the circumstances of the teams, the Mustangs were ecstatic to beat the Mavs.
Only five days later, the Mustangs had a game against Cathedral Catholic, yet another Division I school. Once again, they triumphed, this time 2-1. On Sept. 16, the girls beat La Jolla 1-0.
Varsity field hockey coach Brooke Wilson commented on the fact that her team, Division III, matches up to the larger schools. “We like to play Division I schools because they normally are better competition and many of them are our rival schools. Further, we are able to compete and hold our own against some of the bigger schools…and often come up victorious. In the long run, it only helps my girls and improves their level of play by playing the big and ‘better’ Division I schools.”
In their most recent game on Sept. 21, the Mustangs beat Westview 2-1. Team captain Grace Collins, senior, scored both goals, one at the end of regulation and one to win the game in overtime. This was the fifth Division I school that the field hockey team has played, and they have a record of 4-1 as of Sept. 21.
