Well, the first week of Padres season is coming to a close and, personally, I like what I see. I will admit that I was pretty nervous for this season with the loss of Adrian Gonzalez considering he was really one of our only power hitters, but apparently I was wrong.
After watching the Padres play in St. Louis my mind has completely changed because with players like catcher Nick Hundley and third baseman Chase Headley I think the team will be all right. I hope I don’t jinx it but Hundley has gotten at least a hit per game and is at a .500 batting average according to padres.com while Headley is batting .278 and has driven in three runs.
This should be another great season because of the youth on the team as well. The majority of the team is in their late twenties/early thirties which is similar to last year’s youth but hopefully this time the young players don’t get cocky and keep up the energy until the end. I am also becoming a huge fan of our new center fielder Cameron Maybin because of his speed and athleticism in the outfield and he is only 24! However he hasn’t been doing much at the plate with a .167 batting average, but I have hope for him. He’s young and will get in a rhythm soon.
Lastly, our previous wins and potential for this season comes from our pitching. I watched the entire game with starting pitcher Clayton Richard last Saturday against the Cardinals and I was so impressed. Granted he gave up five hits and two walks, but for the first game of the season I thought he did really well keeping it together and not blowing it like young pitchers have done for us in the past. Plus leave it to the best closing pitcher in MLB last year, Heath Bell, to make the save.
Overall this Padres season looks like it is going to be another fun one because the San Diego baseball club is going to surprise a lot of people who predicted the Padres to finish, I believe, last in our league. Let’s just hope we keep it up the whole season.
