The Varsity boys basketball team came out strong in their first home game Tuesday Nov. 30th.To the strains of “Guess who’s back,” their warm up song, the team ran onto the court where their opponent, Montgomery High, was already beginning to run drills.
The bleachers were packed with SDA students, parents, and friends cheering on the team. The Mustangs started out right, with a 9-0 lead within the first few minutes of the game. As the first half ended, The Mustang boys were still in the lead.
Halftime brought a shift in momentum as the teams switched sides. Montgomery started making their layups and stealing SDA’s passes. As the score got closer, the Mustangs became more motivated and widened the gap in the scores.
During the beginning of the fourth quarter, a fire alarm disrupted the game in the middle of play. Players looked to their coaches, who looked to the referee. The entire gym started filing out of the building, players through one door, fans through another, until the blaring alarm stopped and the ref signaled to continue play until further notice. The Mustangs followed through and won 70-53, giving them a record of 1-0.
Coach Luke Stuckey was able to play the entire bench so that every player had a good amount of playing time. Senior captain and starter Brandon Anderson said that it is important to have faith in every member of your team.
“One of our many strengths is that any one of our players can have a great performance to carry us through the game. My teammates stepped up to win the game for us,” said Anderson.
