Yesterday, after finishing my business in the school bathroom, I approached the sink with my usual caution. Generally I am hesitant to touch the soap dispenser. But today was different. What came out of that mechanism was not the typical white foam but a softer more yellow substance. I was enthralled. I held the sudsy goo up to my nostrils and to my surprise, a pleasant aroma tickled my nose hairs. Could it be? Pineapple scented soap? Who was responsible for such a magnificent and fragrant deed?
Senior Katy Swanson and I set out to do some detective work. Our first stop was the Custodian’s Office. Knock Knock. No answer. The search for who made this major change seemed to hit a dead end. We weren’t giving up yet. We then walked to the Principal’s Office. We had to go no further. The Principal’s Secretary had the number for San Dieguito Union High School District’s Maintenance, Grounds, and Custodial Services Department’s Custodial Supervisor, Javier Lopez. Of course! He would be responsible. Finally our long voyage was over!
Swanson and I reserved a bench in senior court during fourth period and made the final call. Eight torturous rings later, a deep manly tone, voiced over the phone and said, “Hello?” I was speechless. Our soap prophet was speaking on the other line! But again our search had reached a dangerous turn. Not only did we have to sit through 10 minutes of elevator music, but Lopez was completely unaware of the recent change in SDA’s soap scent.
Discouraged, we went to 7-Eleven to get some Raisinets and sat on the gort-filled curb watching the sunset over Carl’s Jr. On the car ride back,we reflected on the day’s adventure, obliviously dropping the chocolaty treats on our seats . Many lessons were learned: that pineapple soap can make miracles, patience is a virtue, and to be satisfied even if you don’t achieve perfection. But most importantly don’t let Raisinets melt on your car seat because it will look like you shat yourself.
