CIF postpones start dates for season one sports
December 2, 2020
Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) released a statement about education-based athletes for the 2020-21 school year on Dec. 1. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) postponed schools to practice and compete until Jan. 1, 2021.
“The CIF is confident this decision is a necessary and reasonable action for our member schools, student-athletes, and school communities in light of the current statewide crisis,” according to the statement.
Football, boys and girls water polo, boys and girls cross country, and girls volleyball will no longer compete in the Regional and State Championship events.
Season one sports will be longer to have an equal opportunity to play. Boys volleyball would move to a Season Two sport to avoid losing a second full season.
More changes are predicted based on the severity of COVID-19.
