“I’m taking four APs and constantly have hours of homework with the stress of getting all As. Sleep deprivation utterly annihilates my mental health constantly…,” said Dace Sandison, junior at San Dieguito Academy.

“I am currently stressed about school because I can’t have my grades dropping,” Connor Hultgren, sophomore at San Dieguito Academy, added.

The Encinitas Mindfulness Community is providing a solution; a workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 22, from 6:30 to 8 in the media center. The hour and a half long session is free, but pre-registration is suggested for the night. Register at sss.sdacademy@gmail.com. The class will go over practice techniques and a couple walk-throughs of different mindfulness techniques.

High school, especially at San Dieguito Academy due to its 4 by 4 schedule, is an extremely stressful time for students. The mindfulness workshop would be a useful tool in teaching students techniques of relaxation and focus. The class was held this past fall at SDA by an individual from the University of San Diego.

Kelly McCormick is a facilitator for the Encinitas Mindfulness Community where classes are run on stress reduction and management through the practice of Mindfulness. McCormick said, “I’ve become a more patient mom, I’m more relaxed. You become more calm, more aware, more observant. Mindfulness…” McCormick paused, then continued with a assured nod, “opens you up to the world,”
