SDA Comedy Sportz Competes Against San Juan Hills
November 14, 2016
SDA’s notorious Comedy Sportz team competed last Thursday, right here at SDA. Their rivals, San Juan Hills High School, came out ready to compete with some of their best players. SDA claimed themselves as the blue team, while San Juan took red.
The game had a high turnout, with most seats in SDA’s auditorium filled with both San Dieguito and San Juan supporters. Compared to other games, the audience wasn’t as lively. There weren’t as many outlandish suggestions yelled out for the ref or tired groans at bad puns. Despite this, they were still ready to stomp their feet and clap for their favorite team when it came down to it.
As soon as the game began, San Juan players proved their improv abilities, putting San Dieguito players up to the challenge. Players didn’t let the somewhat sleepy audience deter them as they acted out improvised skits and spat out their best puns in games of wordplay. Both teams played spectacularly and put their best foot forward, but SDA’s fatal loss in one round put them back 10 points. If not for that one loss, SDA’s team (led by senior Mateo Schmidt) would’ve maintained its usual lead.
After intermission, SDA’s players came back to the stage with a renewed fervor, intent on getting their points back. One of the most notable acts of the night was “Slow-Mo Olympics” from SDA, with the topic of “meditation,” an audience suggestion. However, this successful act that left the audience with tears was met with an equally funny act from San Juan players. Their skit was called “Slide Show,” and involved two announcers standing to the side as the other two players maintained positions as if they were a photograph in the slide show. For this particular act, the slide show was presented by aliens, giving a presentation about their visit to Earth. These two acts were two of the most notable of the night, and were great lead ups to the end of the show.
To conclude the game, all the players competed in a game of “185,” which was basically a game of who can make the worst puns in the format of “185 [audience suggested noun] walk into a bar.” The players received a point for every pun they made that elicited a groan from the audience, giving both teams an opportunity to rack up points.
When all was said and done, the announcer read off the highly anticipated final score. After the last game, the scores (which may or may not have been botched) had escalated into the millions. According to the announcer, in a twist of events, San Juan’s team won by one point. As those who have attended Comedy Sportz games know, the home team typically wins. It was shocking to both the players and the audience to hear that San Juan’s team had ultimately won, but both teams were met with a round of applause nonetheless for their stunning performance.
