School Bells? Parents in the Student Parking Lots? This and More at the Forum

September 16, 2016

Students criticized the new bells at SDA at the Forum today.

At lunch, during the first Forum of the 2016-17, teachers, administrators and students gathered in the painting room to discuss school issues.

The new bells caught a lot of flak around campus. Senior Chloe Williams brought up that ASB has been playing around with making the bells different well-known sounds (aka the themes from “Jaws” or “Kim Possible,” etc.) on Fridays. This idea got a lot of support and ASB said they could make a Facebook poll to see what sounds the students would like.

Another issue with the bells that came up was that it is too loud in certain parts of the school but inaudible in other parts. Principal Bjorn Paige jumped on this issue saying that the administration needs to know where the sound is off so they can fix it.

Physics teacher George Stimson introduced the forum for all the newcomers. The first order of business, as it is every time, was opening the floor for announcements for upcoming events. Then students started yelling out things on campus they had problems with.

After discussing the bells, the next order of business was the problem of parents in the student parking lots. A lot of ideas were brought up but ultimately a solution was not reached for this problem.

The next issue brought up was the media representation of different programs in the school. Both the music program and speech and debate brought up the fact that they didn’t have any representation in the yearbook or in the assemblies. Both ASB and yearbook representatives said that if the different programs came to them they will make sure something happens for the program.

Then a new topic came up of communication between administration and students. Students said that they felt that they didn’t know a lot of information they needed to know regarding matters such as parking permits and college applications.

Administrators suggested that there are various Facebook pages, homeroom announcements and such for issues like this.
