Lowerclassmen roamed the SDA gymnasium and discussed job options Thursday morning while the eleventh grade students took the CAT Mathematics test.
Tables bordered the edge of the room with one to two professions per table, including psychologists, sheriffs, sports announcers, dieticians, pharmaceuticals, and military officials.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to find other jobs that you didn’t think about in earlier times,” said sophomore Sophia McAndrews. “But I want to be a vet, and they didn’t have vets.”
Freshman Kira Anderson agrees. “I don’t think they have a very wide variety of careers, she said.”
Students clustered around popular stations such as the nurse and sheriff set ups. Many teachers offered extra credit to students. All they had to do was interview three different professionals.
Officer J. Worthington from the sheriff’s department said that he and his other members “enjoyed sharing their experiences with other people, and helping guide people in the right direction.”
“I’m so glad I did this…if I could inspire some of these kids to go into clinical research, that would be great. It’s been such a rewarding career for me. I really, really love it,” said clinical researcher Lisa Hamala.
Many professionals, like Hamala, voiced their love for their job and explained to listeners every aspect of their career. Construction Management worker Michelle Coonan displayed the plans for the new math and science buildings being built for the 2017-2018 school year.
Some booths even offered free items such as lanyards, mints, pens, chapstick, and jellybeans, which the students picked up from booth to booth.
