Mental Health Awareness? Exhibition Day? All This and More at the Forum

Promoting mental health awareness and find a new home for Exhibition Day were a few of the topics discussed at the March forum, which was hosted in the art room today during lunch. Senior Nate Neumann and junior Mary Ford took charge of the overcrowded room filled with overexcited students, hands filled with at least two slices of pizza.

The first topic of the day was led by psychology teacher James Hrzina, who spoke about raising awareness for mental illness and promoting mindfulness in the student body. One big way to promote mental health is “Little things done by a bunch of people,” said Hrzina. Principal Bjorn Paige chimed in as well, proposing some homework-less and test-free Fridays.

Math teacher Martin Chaker proposed the next topic of the forum, the theme of his new design homeroom. Chaker said he plans to encourage students to “be a part of a solution with an end goal of building something.”

Next, students expressed concern over this year’s location for Exhibition Day with many students suggesting that the bulk of the tents to be located on the new turf field. Science teacher George Stimson and various students called for the return of the drum circle and the karaoke booth with a live band. In addition, people also suggested recreating the chalk mandala, which had been in the now demolished senior court, on the sundial in front of the Performing Arts Centre.

The last topic discussed at the forum concerned the possibility of gender neutral homecoming nominations in order to promote gender equality. People also suggested a move away from couple-oriented pairs and towards a possible group of three people in homecoming royalty, each of whom would have the opportunity to select a title.
