Tropic Like it’s Hot and Sweaty

The “Tropic Like it’s Hot” dance was a nice way to kick off the year for everyone from the freshman to the seniors last Friday. As two seniors, we had high expectations for our last welcome back dance at SDA, and while the dance didn’t fully meet our expectations, it was still a fun-filled night for all.

ASB did a great job of ensuring that everyone would have something to do, whether it was eating some Kona Ice, posing with friends at the photo booth, or watching “Lilo and Stitch” on the big screen.

The dance floor was where the majority of the people were at. When we entered the crowd of dancing students not only were we greeted by the intense odor of hot sweaty boys, which only got worse the farther in you went, but also by a red beach ball flying right at our faces.

The DJ, who started out strong, attempted to part the crowd to start an ASB sanctioned game of limbo. The students formed a half circle in compliance with the DJ. The game started out successfully, attracting several groups of eager students who wanted to show off their flexibility. Too energized to care if others could see, people began to circle around the limbo pole.  After a while, the DJ helplessly called out for some finalists but by that time everyone had already gone back to dancing.

Soon after the crowd got tired of limbo, the DJ announced the arrival of the Austrian exchange students. As soon as the word “Austrian” came out of his mouth, all of the intrigued underclassmen sprinted to the front to see them. With a huge chunk of the party goers missing, it was easy to see the trail of smashed water cups leading to the dance floor. Apparently, it takes too long to take four steps out of the way to throw a cup away.

The number of students slowly trickled down towards the end of the night, making it easier to see everyone that was there. One could tell that the seniors were the most spirited with their Hawaiian-themed costumes and the freshman were the ones that looked out of place in their nice dresses and wedges.

While it was hot and we were more sweaty than we would like to admit, it was enjoyable and a fun way to start off our last year at SDA.
