Mental Health Homeroom

With 600 incoming freshmen, new homerooms are popping up all over campus. In addition to these brand new homerooms, previously established groups are taking advantage of this opportunity to make some changes. Psychology and history teacher James Hrzina is among those who revamped his homeroom this year.
Hrzina said that “with a lot of the changes going on…I thought this was a good time [to switch his homeroom’s focus].” Previously known as the ping pong and skateboarding homeroom, the newly founded Mental Health Awareness Homeroom aims at“…increasing mental health awareness, promoting mindfulness, engaging in altruistic acts, and exploring issues that foster balance in our lives” said Hrzina.
“These topics are things that are really coming together these past couple years…, There’s a movement going on right now on a personal [and a] social level as well as on a legal level to bring awareness to mental health,”Hrzina said.
Mental Health Awareness Homeroom students hope to “create more awareness,” said senior Alex Spooner. They want to “be a part of something that’s positive,” added senior Danielle Ryan.
