San Dieguito Academy and much of the community surrounding it experienced a short power outage today due to Santa Ana winds.

The power went out right at the start of homeroom and came back on toward the end of second period. The power outage affected most of the school, turning off lights and computers and the bell system, but some places like the gym and the band room kept power.

Students and staff alike had to quickly make adjustments to the normal day to day routine. “I don’t want to say it’s fun, but it does present a challenge,” said AP Psych and AP US History teacher James Hrzina. “Teachers have to get outside the box and do something that we don’t normally do. And I think it depends on what class we’re in [as well.] If it’s really dark, then students can’t read anything.  So it’s a challenge for teachers.”

Principal Tim Hornig and administration went into action to make sure school proceeded on as normal. When asked about the concern for students and the school during a power outage, Hornig said, “Once I’m confident and sure that it’s not a real safety concern, meaning that there’s not a fire or an accident somewhere involving kids, then we just adjust on the fly.”

Due to instances in the past, many students wondered if school would be canceled for the rest of the day. Hornig saidthis was not going to be considered until around lunch time. “I’m pretty indifferent about it. I like the dark,” said senior Katie Proal jokingly.

After the power returned around 11a.m., the school day continued on as normal.
