New Bill Proposed by Governor Jerry Brown
Gov. Jerry Brown proposed a controversial new $113 billion spending plan for California last week. The new plan, if voted into effect, would increase spending on K-12 education, environmental concerns, as well as contribute to paying off debts and saving money to a Rainy Day Fund.
However, some people’s main concern, the state’s support of the UC schools, was not assuaged. Brown promised to increase UC support by $120 million but there’s a catch: tuition must not increase. The UC system had voted to increase tuition if it didn’t get enough money from the state. According to the Washington Post, school system President Janet Napolitano said the proposed increase does not offer schools much room for expansion.
Another concern of many citizens is how the proposed budget will affect the great number of poor Californians. According to the Los Angeles Times, some feel that more money should be allotted to welfare program CalWORKS.
As Brown said on his twitter, “I don’t have all the answers…. I don’t know if anybody does.”
