Meet the Candidates of the 2014 SDA Elections
December 11, 2014
This years runners for the top ASB positions, all of who are running unopposed (except for the candidates from Treasurer), sat down with The Mustang to talk about what they hope for running for their positions, and what they hope to accomplish for SDA.
President: Rebecca Lim
What experience do you have in ASB?
“My very first experiences with ASB were at Oak Crest Middle School where I was enrolled in the class for both 7th and 8th grade. As a shy, introverted, and awkward girl, ASB really helped me open up to collaborating with others, meeting new friends, achieving team goals, and ultimately fostering both social and leadership skills. My advisers were incredibly supportive in everything we did, and eventually one of them convinced me to join ASB at some point during my high school career. Taking their word, I ran for SDA’s Sophomore Director position, and followed up with running for Junior Director the next year. These positions allowed me the opportunity to participate in SDA’s own ASB class, and its wonderful students, adviser, and lessons have truly influenced me as a leader and continue to do so from day to day.”
Why do you want to run for President?
“I want to run for president because, simply put, I love SDA; I am constantly grateful for the safe, supportive, and open-minded environment this school provides and truly believe that it is a unique place. All I can hope to do is give back, and put forth my best efforts towards making the SDA experience one that counts.”
What do you hope to accomplish as President?
“As president, I hope to maintain and embrace the SDA culture we know and love currently, while simultaneously reflecting upon how we can better and adjust certain aspects for our future. While our culture will certainly fluctuate with time, I don’t believe it means that it is diminishing, and there is always a way to embrace new ideas and perspectives from our students. I hope that within the future year, I can work together with students, staff, and admin to view certain changes, adjustments, and even limitations to our traditions as a significant and positive opportunity for progress as a community.”
Vice President: Maddie Campbell
What experience do you have in ASB?
“I’ve been in ASB since 8th grade and have been sophomore and junior director the past two years.”
Why do you want to run for Vice President, and what do you hope to accomplish?
“I want to run for Vice President because my experience at SDA has given me unforgettable memories and I want every student on campus to feel as welcomed and enchanted by the unique environment our school holds as I do.”
Secretary: Zac Sippel
What experience do you have in ASB?
“I have been in ASB since the 7th grade, and I initially didn’t really have a desire to be in it. It was not my first choice for my elective; however I ended up getting it! Then I ran for ASB president the next year and won, and then I have been both sophomore and junior director here at SDA, and have had just the best experience!”
Why do you want to run for Secretary?
“I want to run for secretary because I have always had a desire to be an executive officer. I have been in ASB at this school for 3 semesters now and have always looked up to the executives. Secretary in particular, it is because I have been with the same two people for both sophomore and junior director both consecutive years, and I had no desire to run against them and risk not being able to work with them anymore because they have been awesome!”
What do you hope to accomplish as Secretary?
“As secretary I hope to continue to make ASB the fun, productive, and inclusive environment it is- not only ASB alone but the school as well! It isn’t just about planning events, it’s about being a leader for students all around campus and for being the first impression that people get from the atmosphere at SDA.”
Treasurer: Kylah Clay
What experience do you have in ASB?
“I haven’t worked with ASB in high school. I used to live in Temecula (middle school was 6th through 8th) and in sixth grade I was treasurer for ASB and then in seventh I was president. So, I have had experience in ASB, and it was a lot of fun.”
Why do you want to run for Treasurer?
“I’m running for treasurer because I really love working with finances and want to help the clubs at our school. It’s kinda weird; I have a legit love/hate relationship with math. One day I’ll be swearing at my math homework and the next day I’ll be gazing at it lovingly. I’m not even kidding. When I was treasurer for robotics, I had way too much fun working on deposits and reimbursements and updating the budget. So, I’m running because I love working on finances and I can make a positive impact on the school.”
What do you hope to accomplish as Treasurer?
“I hope to increase ASB’s budget through fundraisers so we can allocate more money to the grants given to clubs. That way the clubs can make more of those cool Japanese donut type shirts and buy Instagram followers for their pages (just kidding, you’re gonna have to result to hashtags).”
Treasurer: Owen Ereso
What experience do you have in ASB?
“I was in ASB my entire year of seventh grade and I am currently in my first semester of ASB at SDA.”
Why do you want to run for Treasurer?
“I have always wanted to run for a position in ASB, so I finally decided to this year. I want to be treasurer so I can have a role with bigger responsibilities, and after watching the Executive Positions in the ASB class this year it seemed like it would be really fun.”
What do you hope to accomplish as Treasurer?
“As treasurer, I would like to work with our budget in order to maximize the amount of money we can use in order to improve school events. I also wish to have a big role in the ASB class and be in charge of various school activities.”
