Every Pint Counts

When the San Diego Blood Bank visits San Dieguito Academy, it is one of the only times where being negative can be beneficial in the lives of others.

The Blood Drive returned on April 22, allowing students, 16 and older, to donate a pint of their blood, from AB+ to O-,  to the San Diego Blood Bank. According to ASB director Rod Keillor, 45 pints were collected by the end of the school day, from both students and teachers.

ASB students roamed the gymnasium as aids, helping distract donors by holding a conversation until the process was complete. Senior Kylie Kofler, one of the ASB volunteers, said, “If I gave blood, I’d want someone  to put bows on my arm afterwards,” referring to the decorative adornments students made for donors when the donation was complete.

Despite the daunting idea of having a needle draw blood, students pushed past this thought and volunteered as donors. Senior Anthony Barnes, donor, said, “It’s a super easy way to save someone’s life. Plus, we have a surplus of blood, why not use it to help someone?”
