Two police cars, two fire trucks, an ambulance, and a Mercy Air helicopter lit up the northwest parking lot of SDA Wednesday night, Feb. 6, after a young man riding his bicycle ran into a parked car on Melba Street.
Spectators said it was a hit-and-run, but firemen said the young man had hit the car. The young man had head injuries and was coughing up blood, firemen added.
Around 9:45 p.m., the victim was being treated in an ambulance before being airlifted toLa JollaScrippsHospital. The paramedics administered medicine to the victim to counteract any combative instincts he may have once in the helicopter, said Captain Paul Spencer of the Encinitas Fire Department. He had been “medically induced into a coma,” added Captain Spencer.
Policemen blocked off the parking lot entrances from spectators, and the crowd dispersed soon after the helicopter took flight and left.
The young man was to be treated in the trauma unit, as his “injuries are life-threatening,” Spencer said.
