The Middle-East can’t seem to catch a break – despite last year’s revolution, Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi has granted himself new powers that threaten to return the government to a dictatorship. The decree, known as the constitutional declaration, forbids judges to dissolve the assembly writing the new constitution. The president can also take any measure necessary to preserve national security, the revolution, and national unity.

18-year-old Oksana Makar was raped and burned to death in southern Ukraine. The three men responsible were arrested and were given their sentences. Artyom Pogosyan was given 14 years imprisonment, Maxim Prisyazhnyuk was given 15 years, and Yevgeny Krasnoshchok was sentenced to life imprisonment. Usually I post articles about various crises and events going on around the world. However, this story about a man suing two airlines because they could not seat his obese wife is, in my opinion, eye-opening. The woman was 425 pounds and the seats could not accommodate her. She later died from a combination of kidney disease and diabetes – she had been attempting to fly home to the US from Hungary to receive treatment. Afghanistan police have arrested two men for beheading a teenage girl in the northern Kunduz province after her father refused their proposals to marry his daughter. The girl, 14, had been carrying water from a nearby well when the men attacked her. There has been conflict over the exact details of the attack. November 29, 2012:
Farmers, monks, and activists had been peacefully protesting the expansion of a Chinese-backed copper mine in northwest Burma when the police used water cannons and tear gas to break up the protest. The camps of the protestors were then set on fire. Twenty- two were injured and are seeking medical attention in a nearby town. There have been negotiations to reason with the protestors, but in the past week the government has been giving them ultimatums to leave the site.
