SDA recently participated in a JCAP competition, placing third place overall. The winning teams from SDA were sophomore Austin Miller, freshman Sinjin Lyon, and junior Josh Minerman for level 2. Level 3 was composed of sophomore Zach Fox, sophomore Sachiko Matsumoto, and sophomore Jesus Aguilar. The final level, level 4, had junior Riley Galleher, junior Mitchell Chivetta, and junior Linnea Willing.
JCAP is a program revolving around students’ knowledge of both Japanese language and culture. Japanese Cultural Academic Proficiency has students from many schools competing to win prizes and display proficiency in Japanese. The competitions are ranked from one through four. These numbers represent the skill and class for the respective level, one representing Japanese I, four representing Japanese IV.
On Feb. 25, students from participating schools entered a competition in teams of three, hosted at UCSD. This competition tested the students’ knowledge of kanji(Japanese words), hiragana(Japanese letters) and katakana(Japanese letters for foreign words).
After the initial competition, students went to a cultural presentation where they rolled sushi for their lunches. “[For me] the best part of JCAP was making sushi,” said junior Josh Minerman.
San Dieguito Academy had 27 students participate, forming nine teams of three students each. About 100 students from SDA, CCA, TP, Scripps Ranch HS, and Patrick Henry HS competed in the three levels. “JCAP was great! The best part was beating Torrey Pines,” said sophomore Austin Miller.
At the events, San Dieguito Academy students cheered on for their teams. The students won third place in Levels 2, 3, and 4.
San Dieguito Academy had done well in JCAP, considering the amount of students that had participated. Congratulations to the winning teams!
