Step aside Drew Carey, Comedy Sportz rocked the new SDA theater again on Jan. 6 by delivering a full house of laughs, clapping, whistle blowing, and audience participation to this competition. A slight twist to the comedy event was the battle against four SDA alumni students (Alec Gordey, Daniel Kusher, Cameron Greene, and Connor McGinley) and four members on the current SDA team, referred to as “The Newborns.” Each team was required to abide by strict rules that if broken resulted in lost points, lost turns, or embarrassment from wearing a paper bag over their head. Charismatic Dave Miller, the MC and referee of the evening, entertained and guided the audience throughout the show.
The alumni team started off strong but the newborns gained the audience’s applause with “Parallel Universe,” a game that switches back and forth from two different fictional places and times. The newborns pretended that they were mystical creatures living in Narnia and Camelot. The audience was especially amused by Mitch Chivetta’s interpretation of a Narnia creature and the animal-like noises that he made.
Another game that brought tremendous laughter was “Back In My Day.” The object of the game was to start off each joke with “Back in my day…” and finish with an audience selected topic. Chivetta delivered a joke about hipsters and Urban Outfitters which received chuckles from females in the audience, while other Newborns member Mitch Lang got a paper bag put over his head for saying a joke that fell into the inappropriate category.
The competition provided a thrilling ride of entertainment as the teams cracked jokes, laughed at one another, and proved to the audience that they’re the masters of comedy. During intermission, to keep the audience in the spirited zone, loud dance music was played and echoed throughout the theater.
The final score was the newborns with 46 points and alumni with 42 points. For more laughs and excitement, the next Comedy Sportz will be held on Feb. 24.
