Because of the new theater construction, the school has temporarily closed off part of the front parking lot, leaving parents to drop off their students in other places, such as the student lot, which has in turn caused congestion there.
Although the front still remains open for parents to drop off their children, the traffic flow in the drop off area is much slower than normal. Because many parents are on their way to work, it has become apparent that the student lot is a much faster option, even though it is not permitted.
According to Principal Michael Grove, there have been many complaints from student drivers about parents blocking the way while waiting for their children to get out of the car, especially in the mornings. Grove has been having weekly meetings with ASB in order to come up with a solution to the problem.
“I find it frustrating that all the parents block my way while all I’m trying to do is get to class on time,” said Brandon Rowley, senior, who has been blocked by parents many times in the lot. “The whole situation is very frustrating because it’s so hypocritical of parents to think they’re above the school rules [for dropping their kids off] just because they’re adults,” said Lane Jackson, senior.
For parents, Grove suggested dropping students off on “any streets surrounding the school” but prefers that students “stay off of Santa Fe because it is dangerous.” He plans to send out this information through weekly newsletters, all calls, and ASB flyers.
