Does the Early SDA Student Always Get the Worm?
The extra sleep phenomenon that is commonly referred to as late start – is just that. Those other Wednesdays that push SDA school hours forward by almost two hours – at the cost of homeroom of course.
Though many students use the day to catch up on some well needed sleep, many tend to wake up to their usual schedule. For example Freshman Magdley Benitez wakes up as she would on any other normal school day. She said it was because “my body is on a schedule, my brain doesn’t want to mess up the schedule so why bother?” She planned on spending the rest of her morning scrolling through her phone and occasionally chatting to passing friends.
Students like freshman Gus Adgate will wake up at their usual hour, 6:15, due to responsibilities such as letting out the dog – or instead spend spending two hours catching up on some “Dark Souls.”
Coffee lovers such as freshmen Milo Spearman and Sage Quigley woke up at seven and took the extra time to drop by at Starbucks and grab a caramel frappuccino and an iced vanilla latte. Spearman though, also stopped by, “at a donut shop down there” where he purchased a glazed donut to go along with his caramel frappuccino.
For students like senior Zach Lara, late start can come in handy at times. He was in the library early in the morning due to transmission problems in his car. He dropped his car off at the shop at around 7:30 and was driven to school by the car dealership. The rest of his morning was occupied by a movie on his smartphone.
It’s also common occurrence for students to forget it was late start. Take freshman Ashlyn Haines. She accidentally woke up at five to take an early morning shower; later her mother told her that it was late start. She then proceeded to go back to bed with her blond hair still wet. She arrived at school at around 9:30 a.m. “And now my bangs are all messed up,” she said.
