New Teachers on the Block: Deb Abrahamson

SDA has had a fair number of new teachers coming to the school this year, and it could be said that Deb Abrahamson fits in that group. But in reality, Abrahamson started teaching here in 1997, but left four years ago to teach at CCA for one year and Diegueno Middle School PE for three years. She is back this year as the new weight training teacher and was drawn to this subject for her passion for the change in fitness movement education.

She majored in health and physical education at Illinois State University and her goal as a teacher is bring the revolution of fitness education to the 21st century. She took the job at SDA over other high schools in our area because this was an amazing new opening for her. She has also been the tennis coach for 15 years here at SDA, so she was excited to be working here for a full time job again.

Coming back to SDA, she was proud to be a part of the school again because she loves the normal routine of working at this school. She’s also really excited to be back seeing students showcase their talented work at Exhibition Day and the SDA Bazaar, which are two events she happily looks forward to for this year. Abrahamson is so happy to be back teaching at SDA because this school means a lot to her and will always have a strong place in her heart.

When Abrahamson was in high school, she lived in San Diego and went to a positive high school in Mission Bay. They got to go off campus for PE warm-up’s every day and she loves that SDA embodies that spirit that relates to its students.

In her free time, Abrahamson travels to Mexico quite frequently. She also doesn’t really have many pet peeves, but one that stands out is students that don’t have their head, neck, and shoulders off the mat when exercising. She also says that her favorite food is ahi tuna and that describes her as a person because she loves catching fresh fish.

In addition, she says that if she got the chance to audition in “American Idol,” she would audition with the song, “Be True to Your School,” by the Beach Boys. She would choose this song because it is really traditional. She also says that if her life were a movie, it would be “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood,” and she would be played by Cameron Diaz.
