The 5th annual San Dieguito Academy scooter day took place on Thursday, March 3rd. Not only were those participating enjoying themselves as they rolled through, but observing students were entertained by this alternative mode of transportation as well. Riding a red razor scooter, Sophomore Brady Lawrence said, “It’s fun.”
A common opinion from students was that there was less participation for this event than in years past. Sophomore Katia Macau, riding a chrome razor scooter said, “I like it[scooter day], except this year I was surprised at how little it was. I definitely heard about it recently, but last year, there was so many more [people].”
Although there was a smaller turnout, those who did participate held their own in creativity, with the upper student lot serving as a sort of scooter arena during fourth period. Switching scooters and making jumps, upperclassmen utilized their free fourths to bring back grade school tricks and race down the parking aisles. During passing period and lunch, there were scooter switch off relays in senior court.
A few alternate forms of “scooters” were seen on campus. Freshman Irena Weaver said, “I would’ve brought a scooter, but it broke, so I rode a rip stick instead. I thought there’d be more people though.”
Though the majority of students who participated did so to either relive their memories as scootering youth or just because it’s the only chance to ride a scooter during school, some did it for deeper reasons. Sophomore Connor Jones who rode a bedazzled pink razor scooter said, “I wanted to express my true self and I wanted to be like, feeling free and alive, feeling the wind on my face, riding through the meadows of SDA. I loved pondering the reasons why kids didn’t bring scooters, I mean, this is SDA, homies.”
Seeing scooter day for the last time, senior Josh Pupping said, “It’s very nice that they’re using the wheel since cave men invented it, and it’s very nice to see the wheel being used this productively. It’s positive for students using their scooters, because they get to their classes faster.”
