SDA Competes In Close Match Against TP

January 18, 2018

The San Dieguito girls soccer team took on Torrey Pines yesterday in a matchup that ended in a 3-2 loss. After losing 7-0 to Torrey last year, the Mustangs knew going into the game that it was not going to be easy. With Torrey Pines having won the Open Division for the San Diego CIF section of girls soccer last year, it was apparent they were a force to be reckoned with. However, the San Dieguito girls managed to hold their own.

The game started with kick off by the Mustangs, It led to the first offensive run of the game, which was ultimately stopped by the Falcon defense. Soon after, Torrey began pressuring the SDA defense hoping for a shot on goal. Senior Julia Honda, senior Brittany Reppenhagen, junior Morgan Busick, and junior Ally Joelson held a constant line that TP was unable to break.

With 26:25 left in the first half, Reppenhagen took a free kick near the 30-yard line that sailed over the goalkeeper’s hands and into the goal. The Mustangs cheered loudly for having scored the first goal against the Falcons this year, when the year before they were unable to get a goal.

Not too long after, Torrey got a penalty kick in the box over a controversial call. They scored on this play, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie. TP scored a second goal with 3:30 left on the clock, ending the first half with a 2-1 lead over the Mustangs.

The second half began with SDA gaining quick possession of the ball and then passing it off to senior Jenna Templin who scored the second goal of the game for the Mustangs within the first two minutes of the half. With the game once again tied 2-2, both teams scrambled to get one more goal to solidify a win. At the 24 minute mark, Torrey scored their third goal off of a handball called against the Mustangs just outside of the box. It was the last goal of the game which put Torrey Pines ahead 3-2.

The San Dieguito girls soccer team’s next home game is Friday, Jan. 19 against Sage Creek at 6:30 p.m.
