Girls Varsity Soccer vs Oceanside Scores First Season Win

December 7, 2017

San Dieguito Academy girls’ soccer played Oceanside High School yesterday in their third match of the season, looking for their first win.

The game started off with a kickoff from SDA and the Mustangs having the majority of the ball possession. The first half finished with no goals from either team, building up the drive in the second half.

The second half began at a fast pace with SDA getting the ball almost instantly. Not even 10 minutes into the second half, Oceanside had a strong shot on senior goalie Makena Garvey who dove and blocked the shot. Going in for the rebound, Oceanside shot again and with the ball on the goal line about to go in, senior Rachel Askari cleared the ball, saving the Mustangs from being scored on.

Soon after the near goal, senior Nadia Haghani crossed the ball into the center of the 18-yard box where senior Julia Honda volleyed it in, bringing the score to 1-0 with the Mustangs in the lead.

With about 15 minutes left in the game, Oceanside had another shot on goal that was blocked by Garvey and then cleared by sophomore Dana Scott, leaving Oceanside with the 1-0 loss.

The team’s next home game is against Mt. Carmel at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19.
