Girls Volleyball Senior Night Celebrate Eight Departing Students
October 31, 2017
SDA girls’ volleyball held their annual senior night against Carlsbad High School Oct. 25 . The final home game of the year was the ceremonial departure of the staggering eight seniors on the team: Kara and Brooke Sagunsky, Kathleen Brown, Audrey Maskiewicz, Jordan Myrick, Holly Teisher, Faith Kelly, and Sarah Colla.
Unfortunately the Mustangs fell to the Lancers in five games, losing in the final game by a score of 14-16. The Mustangs lost the first two games, but kept their chances alive by winning the following two. Every game was extremely close as each one finished within a two or three point difference between the two teams.
The miraculous comeback fell short by the narrowest of margins, as the Mustangs took the Lancers to extra points in the final set. The fifth game in volleyball is usually only played to 15 points, but because of the “win-by-two” rule, the game continued.
Apart from the result, the SDA home crowd was phenomenal. Before the game, the parents and fans honored the seniors for all the time and commitment they have given to representing SDA throughout the years. When it came time to play, the support of the crowd did not waiver and it provided an electric environment for the Mustangs’ final home game.
Colla said, “With a big crowd, we were able to play with higher intensity than usual. The support from other athletes and students was really, really good.”
The Mustangs gave a complete effort, which was highlighted by stellar passing from Brown. But none topped the headlining night of Colla, in which she logged 46 kills, 4 aces, and 10 digs (Maxpreps.com). To put this into perspective, a team needs 25 points in a set to win a set and Colla provided 46 of them.
It was a spectacular final home performance to an already unbelievable season and high school career for Colla. She is currently the leader for kills in the San Diego area with 496 kills this year alone. According to Coach David Savage, Colla is now the all-time kill leader at SDA. She is currently committed to playing Division 1 volleyball at Campbell University.
The Mustangs continue their season on Wednesday, Nov. 1, when they play their CIF playoff game at Our Lady of Peace High School in San Diego.
