Nerds Unite Over the New Trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi

October 12, 2017

The official trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out Monday afternoon. The movie premiers on December 15.

Director Rian Johnson opens the trailer with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) surveying a warehouse filled with weapons. Shortly after, AT-M6’s march towards what looks like the resistance-occupied Rebel base. The music intensifies and the viewers feel the tension rising.

While Snoke (Andy Serkis) describes the “untamed power” of Kylo Ren, the shot changes to Rey (Daisy Ridley) igniting a lightsaber on the island Ahch-To. It is discovered that Rey has the ability to wield the force despite her limited training with a lightsaber. She says, “Something inside me has always been there, but now it’s awake.”

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) looks concerned about Rey’s newfound power. Between his scared impression and what appears to be the Jedi Academy burning, he says, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before, it didn’t scare me enough then. It does know.” He turns away from Rey after.

Kylo Ren, smashing his helmet and in the midst of fighting a battle, says, “Let the past die. Kill it. . . That’s the only way you’ll become what you’re meant to be.” Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) looks concerned for Kylo Ren’s actions now and potentially in the future.

At the same time, Finn (John Boyega) fights Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). Sparks fly as the lightsabers clash. The effects here and throughout the trailer heighten the movie.

Snoke says, “Fulfill your destiny,” while putting Rey in agony.

At the end, Kylo Ren and Rey’s eyes meet. She says, “I need someone to show me my place in all this.” He reaches his hand out to her shortly before the trailer ends.
