Mary Arballo Magana, Class of ’40
Q: Did you enjoy attending San Dieguito?
Magana: Absolutely. We had an opportunity to meet people all the way from Leucadia all the way to Sorrento. We were that small.
Q: How has the school changed?
Magana: “So many changes…in fact… the library used to be the class for home economics, which I’m not sure they teach nowadays… we didn’t have a separate music room, or a science room.
Q: Why did you choose to come back and visit today?
Magana: I’m a graduate of San Dieguito and I went to San Diego State. And when I graduated from there, I came back here as a teacher and taught for three years.
Q: What kinds of San Dieguito traditions were there when you were here?
Magana: The rallies for the sports. We had various classes, Latin, Spanish…we all got along so well… The unity that we had and everybody knowing not only [the people in] the school, but their families. That was great.
Q: What kinds of clubs and extracurriculars were you involved in?
Magana: We had a student store, and I was involved in that. I was a member of the pep club, and anytime there was something to be done for the school, I said, ‘Sure! I can volunteer!’
Q: What are some of your most memorable moments here?
Magana: Graduation… and our change from Pacific View, where San Dieguito started because our school was not completed. That was the first semester of my freshman year… when [there were] no homes around here, just [agriculture] fields. It was very impressive.
