“The Vampire Diaries” returned after more than month on hiatus on Jan. 27. The show about humans, vampires, and werewolves coexisting (and not coexisting) in the same town is one of CW’s most popular. Although the subject of vampires and werewolves seems a little overdone by now, “The Vampire Diaries” delivers a ton of action and suspense for thrill seekers, as well as romance and great character development for everyone else. Season two is well on its way to being better than its predecessor.
Werewolves were introduced this season. At first this seemed to be following the pattern of the popular book series “Twilight.” Luckily, Elana is not in a love triangle with a vampire and a werewolf and probably never will be. The addition of werewolves brings more action to the show, since vampires and werewolves are sworn enemies and try to aggravate one another often. It also lets the audience see more into the character of Tyler Lockwood. The annoying jerk of last season is becoming more likable as a werewolf. The once tough guy is now has a vulnerable side, thus more relatable.
The same goes for Damon Salvatore. There was always something alluring about him, despite the fact that he is evil and kills people. Correction. Sucks their blood and then kills them. Maybe it’s his dark hair and blue eyes. Or that maybe deep down, he’s a good person. Because of his emotional breakdown this past episode, teenage girls all over America have an excuse to love him. With that love however, comes confusion. Is he going to go back to his old ways or will he find some way to cope with his problems? Damon Salvatore is one of the main reason audiences watch “The Vampire Diaries,” Thursdays at eight on the CW.
