Not all high schools get the opportunity to be recognized by CETA for outstanding theatrical work. So when “The Curious Savage”, a production of SDA Theatre was recognized by the California Educational Theatre Associations (CETA) it was a big deal. During the play, a CETA representative came and watched the actors before nominating them for this convention.
The festival was held Jan. 14 to 16 in Foothills, CA. Stephanie Siers, head of the theatre department, said that SDA was one of 40 high schools in southern California invited to perform scenes or plays at this festival. SDA was one of three schools in the North County area selected to perform.
But CETA is more than just a theatre show, it’s an educational experience. “Students take theatre-based workshops and seniors can audition for scholarships,” said Siers. Senior Hannah Dohrer was one of the seniors who auditioned.
“It was the scariest audition I have ever done in my life,” said Dohrer. The audition was being in front of two judges and other seniors.
“Many of the cast and crew were recognized with certificates of merit for outstanding theatrical work,” said Siers.
Madeleine Karydes, freshman, was named Best Supporting Actress. “That’s awesome. CETA does not usually acknowledge younger actors, so this is a big deal,” said Dohrer.
This is the second consecutive year that SDA theatre has been selected for CETA.
