Eyeglasses. Spectacles. Pieces of glass in front of your eyes. Ridiculously expensive. Glasses are everywhere and are here to stay. Gone are the times when one would have to deal with items becoming fuzzy blobs in the distance. I would know, since I have been wearing corrective lenses since third grade. That’s eight years, to save you some thinking. And in the eight years I have been lucky enough to have 20/20 vision, with help from some nice looking plastic frame. I have come to discover that glasses have evolved. No longer are they a sign of someone you can punch and intimidate into writing your English essay. They have become a fashion statement, a way to prove individuality on your face, for the whole world to see. Glasses are no longer the universal nerd indicator; they are the newest fashion accessory.
Previously, it’s always been the poor kid in the glasses that gets pushed in the hall. Now, glasses have become less of a necessity and more of an accessory. Glasses are no longer one shape and one size. They have become such a trend, that designers have decided to take part in this movement. Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Juicy Couture all have their own eyeglasses lines.
While those are big names in the fashion world, the number one most known and top selling eyeglasses line is Ray-Ban, a brand that has definitely caught many eyes. The notorious Ray-Ban frames and countless plastic knock-offs are everywhere. Known for their sunglasses, Ray-Ban has extended the design to normal glasses, which have received a warm welcome from consumers, including me. Since these big names have invested into the spectacles look, this look seems here to stay.
Every month in my InStyle magazine, I see at least one ad for couture eyewear and one planned outfit that includes glasses as an accessory. Every outfit I plan, I think “Is this a glasses outfit?” If not, I either deal with it, or put in contacts, my sworn enemy.
People can choose from millions of different designs, brands, colors, shapes, and sizes. And being able to choose these certain aspects have given people the ability to use their bad eye vision to their advantage. Glasses are now a statement, whether it is “Look at me, I am a total indie kid,” or, “I have so much money, I can afford to drop $387.95 on a pair of glasses.”
Glasses have become the ultimate awesome addition to any person in any outfit. As the new dynamic accessory, glasses can be seen on the faces of everyone who knows whats what in fashion. Or they simply have bad eyesight and are riding on the rising wave of the optical accessory. In any case, glasses have definitely evolved from the nerdy eyesore it once was into today’s trendy statement.
