Recently, some homerooms have been participating in playful battles that are meant to increase the school’s feeling of community. Physics teacher George Stimson and social science teachers Kerry Koda and Scott Huntley have had their classes engage in a wide variety of competitive games and group activities.
“It was just fun to get out of the class and interact with people you don’t ever see. Ever,” said senior Madison Fairchild. Some students say the purpose of homeroom battles is to pull normally antisocial teens into a positive and friendly atmosphere that will help SDA in a beneficial manner.
Students in Stimson’s class agree that it is a very exciting worthwhile experience and these events will continue to occur throughout the year. “It’s definitely a positive effect. You get to know people in different grades, and get a chance to get to know them,” said senior Maddy Scarlett.
“We got a picture that you had to paint and something with zombies, mummies, and water balloons, and a French picnic, and sometimes we make breakfast. We don’t always do games. We try to do something every Friday,” said Scarlett.
Brightly colored paintings with abstract visions were strung across the walls of Stimson’s classroom left over from the homeroom games, like a symbol of his homeroom’s friendly open atmosphere.
