The Spectacular Now

By Anne Bilse, Staff Writer

“The Spectacular Now” is a funny and touching drama portraying the life of a party boy, Sutter Keely. He lives in the moment, cherishing every second to have fun and be the life of the party with a whisky bottle by his side. While everyone is making plans for the future to go off to college, Sutter finds himself lost, and the only thing sustaining his charisma and charm is alcohol.

One morning Sutter wakes up after passing out on a lawn, but he is not alone. A polite girl, Aimee, played by Shailene Woodley, is standing over him. Aimee Finicky is a shy senior with good grades and a bright future, but goes unnoticed by her peers throughout her high school. Sutter is ready to change that.

Right from the start they have an undeniable connection and learn to love each other for who they truly are. With senior year coming to an end, they have to face the looming responsibility of adulthood. Sutter and Aimee must learn to accept themselves and overcome the demons of their past, so they can make decisions for the future. The quirky relationship between opposite personalities leaves you rooting for the unlikely couple.

This story depicts the harsh reality of high school relationships. Viewers can easily connect with the characters that face relatable obstacles. By end of the movie, it feels like you have been through senior year with them. The director James Ponsoldt, films each scene in a beautifully simplistic way. The natural chemistry between the main actors Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley equate to a heart-felt performance. If you liked “Perks of being a Wallflower” this movie brings out the same feelings portraying the struggles of coming-of-age. Without focusing on the usual cliques of high school movies, “The Spectacular Now” is about two people who simply enjoy the company of being with each other.
