The much anticipated Comedy Sportz Red Rover game against La Costa Canyon took place on Friday evening in the theater.

The game began with LCC choosing the head-to-head game “What Are You Doing?” The round stayed neck and neck, with each team burning through players until SDA captain, senior Daniel Magnuson, channeled his inner James Bond and Lion King to pull a Mustang win for the first round. Because this was a Red Rover game, SDA got to steal a player from LCC, instead of the usual five points for winning a round.

Things intensified as SDA stole sophomore Ross Goldschlag from LCC. Just as Goldschlag joined the other team, LCC lost a metaphorical point for throwing a water bottle to him. SDA then played “My Movie,” showing the audience snippets of original movies such as “Leaving the Garden: The Tomatoes Aren’t Done” and “The Door Opens…Slowwwly.”

LCC tried to win back their player in “Interrogation,” but it was hard to catch up when LCC captain, senior Jacob Reiss, fouled by asking if he was pooping, incurring a penalty of playing with a cardboard box over his head for the rest of the round. Ultimately, Reiss could not figure out that he was cleaning Leonardo Dicaprio’s bathroom with Beyoncé.

SDA stole senior Bryce Gallagher from LCC. They were comfortable in their lead while playing “Slideshow,” but LCC’s “Blindline” blindsided the audience with an epic kiss that made them the clear winners of that round.

LCC reunited with Goldschlag and chose the next head-to-head, “Replay.” The same scene was acted out over and over by each team in different styles, with SDA’s under-the-sea interpretation full of surprising spit-takes beating LCC’s random accent-infused romance interpretation.

SDA went into intermission with LCC’s Gallagher and Goldschlag as temporary members of their team.

After a relaxing intermission, the spectators were ushered back into the theater. LCC chose “Story” to start off the new round and thus began the endearing story of the Furry Cricket and his adventures. Players from both LCC and SDA were slowly deemed “outta there” (or out of the game) as the story went on until a final face-off between captains gave LCC the win and the chance to steal senior Mateo Schmidt from SDA’s team.

Next up was a tense game of “Silent Tension” by LCC in which the last two remaining players did a completely silent scene consisting of one player pretending to rub mayonnaise all over his body. SDA chose to play “Cut Away,” engaging the audience in a round of “You’re the Best Around” by Joe Esposito that no one knew the words to. SDA took home the win, taking Schmidt back.

SDA’s luck was beginning to run out, though, when their made-up-on-the-spot game, “SALAD,” lost to LCC’s game of “Forward-Reverse.” “SALAD” proved to be too fast-paced for the players to keep up (and too hard for the players to spell!), allowing LCC to win Gallagher back.

Going into the last game, the score was 5-3 with SDA in the lead. Players chose “Dance Party” as their final game of the night. As players danced around the stage, the audience witnessed an impressive display of The Wheelbarrow, twerking, and interpretive dancing. With each pause in the music, a few players were chosen to do a scene starting in their frozen positions. SDA players finished strong with their freeze-dance inspired scenes and the drumroll for the winner echoed around the room as the audience stomped their feet in anticipation.

The final score turned out to be 4-4 (or 5-3 if you ask Magnuson…6-2 if you ask the audience), giving SDA the win (or tying… nobody actually knows). On his team’s performance, Reiss said, “We did well… other than losing all our people, but it was really fun. We love coming over here.”

All proceeds from ticket sales went to the NAMI club, which works to reduce the stigma on mental illness. The NAMI club meets on Mondays at lunch in James Hrzina’s room (P-12).
