Pharrell William’s “G I R L” Review
Pharrell Williams’s album “G I R L” is packed with happy dance music that gives the listener a happy, feeling as if they can tackle the world. Williams is more innovative than the average pop artist. His unique, exciting experimentation with beats never gets old.
Pharrell Williams, past member of the hip hop and R&B band N.E.R.D and producing group The Neptunes, came out with his second solo album on March 3 named “G I R L.” Williams’ platinum song “Happy” premiered in November appearing on the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack. The song includes the first 24-hour-long music video ever, where you can visit 24hoursofhappy.com and watch different people dancing to the song every hour.
Williams’ 10 song album has a broad mix of genres from alternative rock to R&B and pop. The back to back songs, “Hunter” and “Gush” have a souk/funk feel, with “Hunter” a bit faster and outgoing, but both extremely fun to dance to. Throughout the album, Williams keeps you in a happy, loose, mood with his falsetto tone and innovative beats. My personal favorite off the album would have to be “Lost Queen” ft. Andy Hyutha Gaol. The over seven- minute song has an extremely unique beat that changes frequently throughout. The song starts out with harmonic vocals with a choir creating a beat in the background.
Considering all of the past producing work Williams has done in the past, it is not a surprise that he is able to create such innovative music. He has been nominated for several Grammy’s for his work, including his production of Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” the soundtracks of both Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2.
I recommend that anyone listens to album if they enjoy anything from alternative to funk;
“G I R L” gives off a happy excited vibe that leaves listeners wanting only wanting more.
