Sons of the Sea Concert

“I’m sorry guys, but we’re a relatively new band; I’m not sure that we know any more songs to play,” Brandon Boyd called out to the crowd after an hour and a half. That may sound confusing to those who are familiar with Boyd and his music. He is best known for his work with Incubus the rock band, which has countless albums, that originated right here in California. So what is this “new band” he speaks of? Sons of the Sea.

The band performed Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the House of Blues to a fairly large crowd abuzz with excitement to hear the singer with his new crew. The Sons of the Sea had an entirely different sound from Incubus, with much softer and gentler tones compared to the heavy sound of the rock band.

Boyd, though, brought just the performance that anyone could hope for. For two hours, he sang as soulfully as ever before. Having seen him in concert with Incubus as well, I can vouch that his performance was just as powerful if not more than with his other band members.

The band performed songs from Boyd’s individual album “The Wild Trapeze” as well as their own compositions off of the album also titled “Sons of the Sea”. The music was tremendous, but in the end it was the performance that prevailed. Boyd is so devoted and involved with his music that it is nearly impossible not to feel the same way he does about the words sung. The best way I can describe the feeling is like the culmination of some sort of spirituality. I am not a religious individual, but listening to Boyd belt out heartfelt lyrics, I feel something like religious revelation.
