Sherlock was back… and now it’s gone for another two-year , leaving dedicated fans with a cliffhanger and a sense of complete confusion.
The first episode is all about Sherlock coming back into John’s life and realizing that John has moved on. Mary Morstan, soon to be Mary Watson, is introduced and if you think you know everything about her, you don’t. As will be revealed in episode three, Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have decided to break from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tradition. Viewers are led into unknown territory and left there, to be continued in season four.
Two years of speculation were dashed. There is no definitive new villain to fill Moriarty’s shoes, and the antagonist of season three is not the one any fan expected. He’s creepy and frankly annoying – his fate was oddly satisfying. So the question is, what is in store for fans in season four? What does that cliff hanger mean? Did anybody die on that roof top in “Reichenbach Fall”?
To say the least, season three defied expectation. What is to come, no one knows. In the meantime, viewers can go back to reading fan fiction and speculating about Mary’s story, the unexpected return of a mastermind, and (spoiler alert) whether or not the Watsons will name their child after Sherlock.
