Don Jon
October 2, 2013
I’ve wanted “Don Jon” to make its way to theaters ever since Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced it over a year ago, and I can now say it was well worth the wait. Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed, and starred in this contemporary take on the classic “Don Juan” with a supporting cast including Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, and Tony Danza.
“Don Jon” centers around a New Jersey porn-addict (Gordon-Levitt) trying to be happy with his love life despite the unrealistic expectations caused by his obsession. This is balanced nicely with Johansson’s character whose unrealistic love life expectations are set by her obsession with cheesy romance movies. The two meet early in the film and the chemistry between them immediately sets Johansson’s character up as the love interest.
However, the audience soon sees that the two might not be the best fit for each other. A few twists and turns in their relationship later, and I was left with a completely satisfying ending that I didn’t expect before entering the theater. But what really stuck with me about this movie was the character development shown through the slight tweaks of Jon’s weekly routine.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie, but I’ll warn you that it is rated R for a reason, containing graphic clips of pornography and some pretty explicit language.
