Warm Bodies
March 4, 2013
To say that zombies are becoming as overused in today’s culture as vampires once were is an understatement. “The Walking Dead,” “Left 4 Dead,” and even “Plants vs. Zombies” are just a few examples of the craze, and aren’t we all sick of hearing about our impending doom- THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? However, the newest zombie movie, “Warm Bodies,” is not as cliché as one might think. Talked about as “that zombie love story movie,” at first glance “Warm Bodies” looks as such; cheesy, awkward-yet-cute, romance based -but with zombies. Walking into the theater, I certainly had my doubts. However, 10 minutes in I was pleasantly surprised by the originality as well as the humorous narration of R, the main character, whom for a dead guy, is quite thoughtful.
Based on the 2011 book by Isaac Marion, the movie tells the story of a zombie who falls in love with a girl named Julie after he eats her dead boyfriend’s brains, gaining all his memories. Naturally this makes for quite an awkward beginning to a relationship. R saves Julie’s life and takes her to where the zombies have congregated in an airport. Camped out in a 767, Julie learns the nature of her captor to be unlike everything she has been taught about the undead. Having fallen in love with Julie, R begins to change, acting less like a corpse and displaying signs of…life?
Although the plot was stereotypical in a couple of scenes, altogether the movie was funny and original. The humor and zombie element give it more substance than a typical chick flick, making it enjoyable for a larger audience.
