I am no fan of reality shows. I cringe at Kardashians and run from anything with the word “wives” (from basketball, to mob, to sister, and house). But, ABC’s newest show “GCB,” which stands for “Good Christian Belles,” has drawn me in. It has all the elements of a reality housewife show, but is scripted.
The story follows widowed Amanda Vaughn returning from her hometown of Dallas after her husband dies and is exposed as a Ponzi scheme mastermind. She finds that her nemeses form high school act just the same: being gossipy and hypocrites.
In the beginning half of the hour-long show, Amanda alleged that she had changed and was no longer the catty, backstabbing bitch she was in high school. But, this façade degrades by the end, when she openly embarrasses one of her enemies in church.
Which bring me to the point of the show that makes me love it so much.
The show highlights the hypocrisy of “good Christian belles” and exposes them for the “good Christian bitches” that they really are. I love knowing that these women have millions of dollars, servants, and attractive husbands at their disposal, so they must find fault in each other to fill their days.
I will continue to watch “GCB”, as long as it runs. Having Kristin Chenoweth star as top bitch Carlene Cockburn add to the pull, but since I will continue to avoid anything resembling Texas, this is my one lesson in Texan stereotypes. I would like to know what I’m avoiding.
“GCB” runs on ABC at 10 on Sunday nights.
