“Off the Map”, ABC’s newest medical drama, has received a certain amount of criticism for its “Grey’s Anatomy” type approach. Certainly, the links are obvious right from the pilot episode. Replanting the show at an underfunded medical clinic “somewhere in South America” couldn’t change that much about the basic structure of a “Grey’s Anatomy” style show.

Personalities from all of “Grey’s” original residents can be found all mashed together into the three new comers: Lily Brenner (Caroline Dhavernas), Tommy Fuller (Zach Gilford), and Mina Minard (Mamie Gummer). In addition, the well known “McDreamy” character-type of “Grey’s Anatomy” is clearly present in “Off the Map’s” Ben Keeton (Martin Henderson) the clinics founder and “one of the world’s greatest humanitarians.”

The characters from the new show, naturally, have their own convoluted back-stories that they are none too eager to share. Everything goes—from Brenner’s fiancée who was killed in a bike accident while on an errand for her, to Keeton’s wife has been in a semi-vegetative state for five years – and whom everyone else believes is dead.

Still, the basic idea of the show does manage to capture interest with its storylines bringing viewers into the complex and intriguing world of a “Doctors without Borders” type environment.
