SPOILER ALERT: No Strings Attached
January 25, 2011
Just days after receiving a Golden Globe for her outstanding performance in “Black Swan,” Natalie Portman graced box offices again. She proved her versatility by starring in a pre-Valentine’s Day chick flick entitled “No Strings Attached.”
The plot is overused and wholly predictable, and essentially the idea is that friends Emma (Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) attempt to have a sexual relationship without developing an emotional attachment to one another. They do not succeed. Obviously.
Despite the tired story line, the witty banter between starring and supporting cast members and decent performances by both Portman and Kutcher keep the movie entertaining and light-hearted. Portman depicts an independent Type A doctor doing her residency who spends most of the movie attempting to push away a teddy bear-esque Kutcher, trying much harder to deny her feelings for him than he does for her.
“No Strings Attached” is not a groundbreaking or memorable film, but it is a charming flick that is sure to please fans of romantic comedies. There are worse ways to spend a Friday night. If nothing else, the attractive Kutcher and Portman give viewers something nice to look at for two hours.
