The premiere of “America’s Next Top Model” cycle fifteen aired on Sept. 8 and audiences across the country were once again able to indulge in the petty dramas of a model’s life. However, along with a new season, the program seems to be trying to head in a new direction. Throughout the episode viewers were constantly reminded by the show’s host, Tyra Banks, that this season would be centered on high fashion.
This time, the winner will be rewarded with a two page spread in Italian Vogue, a cover and an additional spread in Beauty in Vogue, a contract with IMG Models, as well as the usual $100,000 contract with Cover Girl Cosmetics. Indeed, such prizes are at a different level than the previous Seventeen Magazine gig. Still, certain aspects have definitely been left unchanged. Already in the first episode was gossip, tears, drama, egotism, and, let’s not forget, nonsense. However, these characteristics do help to make for an interesting and watchable show.
Aside from all the emotional content, there was actually some modeling being done. Contestants participated in the routine Tyra Banks, Mr. Jay, and Miss Jay Alexander interview, where the most common reaction was, “Ommg it’s Tyyyraaa!!” They also did a group runway practice, where the girls were separated into categories such as “Blondes,” “Quirky girls,” and “Sexy.”
After the first cut, those remaining did a photo shoot, this time working in pairs. The judges afterwards were able to decide on the 14 contestants who would make it past the final elimination of the episode.
A variety of characters made it past the first step, ranging from the struggling single mother, brainy beauty, lanky and awkward girl, all the way to the overly excited and nonsensical sister pair. These two sisters are so loud and obnoxious that they contradict Tyra’s picture of an elegant and high fashion model. All in all, this will be an engaging season of “America’s Next Top Model.”
